Euterpe: Muse of Music
Steven Lopez and Tom Gundelfinger O'Neal will be in attendance with Guest DJ Hanif Wondir
Steven Lopez has always been fond of art. He found himself drawn to murals, paintings, sculptures, music and other art forms at a very young age. He loved to draw as a child and loved to listen to inspirational music. After High School Lopez made a solo move to Oregon to attend college. He graduated in 2000 with a degree in Fine Arts.
The support that he received during college became the catalyst that would move his talents forward. With guidance and encouragement from friends, professors and classmates, Lopez began sharing his art with the public. He had his first opening in 1998 at the Cannibal Flower Gallery and has had continued success with several openings since. The amazing experiences and interactions during this period of his life cultivated life long relationships that still inspire his work.
Early on Lopez discovered that Jazz, Funk, Soul and Hip-Hop seemed to be ingrained into his very being. Not only did these influences release his creativity, they brought it to life. You can still see this in his respected graffiti art, as well as in his unique contemporary style that has become the “After Midnight Series”.
Lopez has had his art featured in Los Angeles at the Grind Gallery, Fenario Gallery, Nucleus Gallery and the Blue Bird Gallery. He has also worked with big names like Reebok, Nestle, X-Games, Coachella, Vans, Sims, United Way, Spy Optic and countless music videos and hotels. He has also made appearances on Fuel TV, BBC and the Discovery Channel.
Lopez’s work is still inspired by relationships he cultivates with people, music, and art. What he learns from people and life experience is the foundation of his work. His formula is and always will be story, substance and then style.

Tom G. O’Neal: As a young man with a profound fascination of all things creative, Tom immersed himself in the study of painting and design. He attended both the Chicago Art Institute and the University of Illinois. Near the end of his college career, Tom began to transition into photography. The application of design and composition theories from his prior studies to the process of film capture was a natural segue. The world of the camera was particularly fascinating to Tom because of its mobility. He regarded this new medium as a portable canvas and never looked back at his easel. This developing passion became the focus of a lifelong career.
Along with his burgeoning talent as a photographer, Tom also had an instinct for timing. He immersed himself in the intense Los Angeles music scene that exploded in the sixties. He found himself in great demand by several high profile rock and roll stars. Ironically, he applied both his photographic and graphic design skills in the creation of over 80 album covers, including the iconic Déjà Vu cover used by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Other notable groups were the Rolling Stones, Steppenwolf, Joni Mitchell, Poco, Crazy Horse, the Mamas and the Papas, B.B. King, and The Three Tenors. He developed relationships with entertainers that created opportunities for many years to follow.
The seventies found Tom searching for a change in genre. Perhaps his intuition once again was a factor, for he shifted his focus to photojournalism and set off to work in Africa. Thee he was hired worked for the Peace Crop with key shooting assignments in the Congo. His horizons were broadened by exposure to international politics and humane interest assignments. From Africa he traveled to Paris and London where he absorbed and photographed the European art scene, meeting interesting people and exchanging ideas. He experimented with light and shadow, developing techniques that remain innovative and contemporary in the current environment. Ready to have a more permanent location Tom returned to California and set up a studio on the Monterey Peninsula. He continued to work with people, but also found inspiration in still-life and landscape photography. Even with this new base, Tom searched for fine art photography subject matter in frequent travels. From the saturated color palette of Mexico to the ethereal hues and shadows of Venice, Tom revels in the process of creativity.
The TGO Photography Studio and Gallery provide a full spectrum of services. Along with his fine art photography, Tom specializes in wedding, commercial and portraiture. Tom observes that from rock and roll to weddings, the rare milliseconds of the moment can never be recreated. He knows that intuition and timing are still the most important factors in his job, and have always served him well. www.tgophoto.com

Women of Whimsy comedy improv
Making their fourth appearance at the Alternative Café, in Seaside, the “Women of Whimsy,” return with their “WoWsically” funny, high energy show this Friday night. The audience calls out suggestions and the “Women of Whimsy” turn them into hilarious scenes and skits, made up on the spot and keeping it fun for the whole family, a point of pride for these funny women. “It’s so much fun to be able to take my 13 year old daughter to a show and not have to worry,” stated Marilyn Dunne who attended last months performance. Another feature they are proud of is their community spirit. Every performance will benefit a local non-profit organization with $2 of the $10 general admission ticket earmarked for donation. The local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, is the beneficiary for the June, July and August shows. The Surfrider Foundation fights to keep our beaches oceans free of pollution. “We look forward to their monthly appearance,” said Scott Grover, owner of the café. “They put on a great show…high energy, funny and fun for all ages.” The next show is Friday, July 31st, starting at 7:30. Matt the Electrician
Born Matt the Electrician on a frosty San Francisco morn, Matt and his family soon moved to Oregon in search of culture, nice weather and vineyards. Once there, Matt spent much of his youth obsessed with Woody Guthrie, The Hollies and the soundtrack to Godspell. The Electrician's were A musical, yet thrifty family, so they found a swell garage-sale trumpet to encourage this musical interest. The Electrician's moved back to California in the early eighties; and while the trumpet was eventually discarded, the expensive private lessons were not a complete waste, as it was here that Matt met and fell in love with the guitar. Unfortunately, because of the elder Electrician's spiraling oragami habit, money was not only extremely tight but intricately folded and beautifully hung all around the Electrician household, so Matt was limited to the only three chords his parents could afford. His dad assured him this was plenty, that kids in China only get one or two. And strangely, it all worked out. Matt headed to Austin, a serious music town, with aspirations of becoming a serious musician. Mission accomplished. After years of a steadily-built, devoted fan base, some would say that Sever's unassuming baby-faced slacker image and "nice guy" blue-collar charm belie a very complex and intoxicating energy that is equal parts gritty neo-folk, frenetic boyish pulse, and tangled life experience - all held cohesive by his deft guitar skills and liquid vocals reminiscent of a young Paul Simon wrapped around a Tom Waits heart. Some wouldn't be able to say that. Some would rather type it. Others might yodel. Matt released his first CD, "Baseball Song", in 1998. "Home" in 2000, "Made For Working" in 2003 and “Long Way Home” in 2004. The new CD, “One Thing Right”, was recorded in Austin at The Aerie Studios; co-produced by Jud Newcomb, Mark Addison and Matt, and is slated for release in early 2007. It is currently being shopped to labels. Sever lives and works with his family in Austin, TX. www.myspace.com/matttheelectrician to listen to the music.

On Thursday February 11th at 12:00 pm, we are presenting a “live painting event” where Man One will be demonstrating his working process on the side of a white panel truck parked outside The Alternative Cafe. Spectators and press are welcome to come and experience this rare and fantastic event.
In conjunction with the opening weekend of the exhibition at The Alternative Café gallery, Man One will do a hands on demo and talk about the art of graffiti and aerosol technique. This talk will be held at The Alternative Cafe on Saturday February 13th from 3-5pm. We have invited visual art students at CSUMB.
MAN ONE
Artist/Muralist/Curator Bold, colorful art strokes. The urban art movement emerges making cultural statements across the country as technology grows ever more complicated. A leading urban muralist/artist enhancing the definition of art today is Los Angeles native Man One. Involved with the Graffiti Art movement since 1987, Man One began his artistic journey on the streets of Los Angeles tagging and leaving his trademark of bold, colorful aerosol strokes as he searched for his artistic purpose. As he continued to explore his talent and define his own unique statement and style, a college art professor recognized Man One's strong talents and encouraged him to move forward on his career. After completing his B.A. degree in Fine Arts from Loyola Marymount, his newly inspired passion began to change the way the world interpreted graffiti and urban art. Man One set out to make a name for himself and strengthen the real meaning behind the art movement.
It only took the first few commissioned murals to allow Man One to realize his art could transcend beyond the streets and into the world of commerce. His bright and colorful murals made their way into the underground urban art movement pioneering the evolution of graffiti as an art form, not a negative statement of culture. Today, his artwork reaches internationally having been featured in venues throughout the world. His artwork has been showcased in over 40 group exhibitions domestically and internationally, eight one-person shows, and displayed at several museums and high profile galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Getty, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana, and Parco Museum in Tokyo. Commercially, Man One's commissions include murals, designs and concepts for MTV, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Sony, Ubisoft and many others, as well as scenic visuals for feature films, music videos and featured in television commercials and ads for Microsoft, Target and Ford. His artwork has been profiled and featured in a number of international magazines, newspapers and books including The Washington Post, New York Magazine, Warp Magazine (Japan), 38Times (Japan), Lowrider Arte Magazine (USA), Rime Magazine (USA), La Dolce Vita (Italy), Aelle (Italy), Backspin (Germany), Rap Pages (USA), Airbrush Action (USA), “Graffiti World” (by Nicholas Ganz), “Painting the Towns: California Murals” (by Jim Prigoff and Robin Dunitz), and “Graffiti L.A. (by Steve Grody) to name a few.
His success as a freelance artist has allowed him to travel extensively throughout the world. He also owns and runs Crewest, the only L.A. based gallery dedicated to the upliftment of Graffiti Art.
